BILL CARROTHERS .PIANO, VOICE

The La Buissonne recording studios have seen hundreds of albums emerge since they began their activity twenty-five years ago. Each album has been the occasion of intense moments and marvellous encounters. I’ve already recorded some ten sessions with Bill Carrothers, but this particular one was really special. At the end of a previous session, we’d finished up round the piano with Bill to recall our favourite tunes. During the discussion, he hummed a version of ‘Once in a While’ with a few arpeggios in his own style to accompany it – here was another Bill, one I didn’t know till then, a singer in the purest tradition, with a vocal timbre close to Chet’s. I immediately grabbed one of our good old microphones and put it in front of him ; what came next are the moments of deep emotion presented here on this CD. Alternating piano solos with vocal pieces, Bill gave us “his” songs using harmonies he had distilled or altered in his own way. He too was transformed – in an altered state, where he could only be reached or touched by the love generated by the songs and their contents. We were no longer in the studio, nor were we in a normal time frame either – we were all in a state of absolute grace, love and peace. GÉRARD DE HARO

Depuis ses vingt-cinq années d’activité, les studios La Buissonne ont vu naitre des centaines d'albums.
Autant de moments intenses et de rencontres merveilleuses.
J'ai déjà enregistré une dizaine de séances avec Bill Carrothers.
Pourtant celle-ci fut toute particulière.
A la fin d'une précédente séance d'enregistrement, nous nous sommes retrouvés autour du piano avec Bill à évoquer des thèmes qui nous sont chers. Au fil de la discussion, il fredonne en arpégeant à sa façon un "Once In A While".
C'est alors que je découvre un autre Bill. Un chanteur dans la pure tradition. Un timbre de voix proche de Chet.
Aussitôt, je saisi un de nos bons vieux micros, le pose devant lui et s'en suivirent les ins- tants profonds gravés dans ce disque. Alternant piano solo et pièces chantées, Bill pose ces "ses" mélodies sur des harmonies qu'il distille et transforme à sa façon. Il est alors dans un autre état, impalpable, intouchable si ce n'est par l'amour et le contenu de ces chansons.
Nous ne sommes plus dans le studio, ni dans le temps, mais dans un état de grâce absolue, d’amour et de paix. GÉRARD DE HARO
