Après Uptown Desire et son encrage new-yorkais, Mock the Borders vient nous rappeler la nécessité de l'ouverture à l'autre et du refus d'un monde régi par le pouvoir. La musique permet d'évoluer librement, à l'heure où nos libertés s'effacent, derrière l'omnipotence du pouvoir sécuritaire, sanitaire et technologique.
Au plus près de cette préoccupation se trouvaient Ornette Coleman
et l'Harmolodie, qui m'ont toujours fasciné et pour lesquels j'aime dire mon attachement. Mock the Borders ne repose pas sur un concept musical central, mais en son centre se trouvent l'urgence et la sensibilité d'un monde où, comme disait Ornette, la musique
“permet à chacun d’être un individu qui n’a à imiter personne d’autre”.

After Uptown Desire with its New York City roots, Mock the Borders invites us to challenge the limits defined in a world ruled by power. Music makes it possible to evolve freely and move beyond the frontiers so heavily guarded by algorithms, and security and sanitary norms. Ornette Coleman and the Harmolodie, to whom I feel the most connected, have always fascinated me for their zeal to transcend musical norms. Mock the Borders is not based on a central musical concept, but places at its center the urgency and the sensitivity of a world where, as Ornette said, music “allows everyone to be their own individual without having to imitate anyone else”.

Creative, fresh, continuously surprising - this is the first album I've bought that is not straight-ahead jazz. Nachoff has won me over with brilliant writing, brilliant musicianship, and evocative arrangements. Just when a solo seems to have completed its exploration of a musical statement, for one example, the low sonorities of a beautiful synth line jump in to add gorgeous texture and to take the musical idea into fascinating territory.
