Du nouveau dans le monde du quatuor à cordes et de la musique contemporaine. Une œuvre crée par deux compositeurs : Daniel D’Adamo et Thierry Blondeau

Ce disque reflète une musique d’aujourd’hui porté par un projet rare et singulier. Le titre de l’album se réfère à Deleuze et à son concept de pli et à Liebniz pour sa vision du dialogue avec le monde. En effet le partage, le travail entre deux compositeurs, Daniel D’Adamo et Thierry Blondeau, a servi à trouver la différence, les points de frictions créateurs. Trouver à travers les cordes, les plis qui laissent apparaître le volume, la matière. Couper et distordre pour ce quatuor à cordes (Frédéric Aurier, Julien Dieudegard, Julian Boutin, Luc Dedreuil) au service de musiques inattendues, comprendre et chercher dans les chemins de traverse, le présent, la musique, leur musique d’aujourd’hui

PLIER-DÉPLIER

Plier-Déplier est en effet l’œuvre commune de Daniel D’Adamo et de Thierry Blondeau écrite pour le Quatuor Béla. Les deux compositeurs ont su mettre à profit leurs différences : l’un est plus préoccupé par le temps et l’autre par la matière. En intercalant leurs feuillets, ils ont su marier leurs appétences en une composition homogène.

En acceptant de réaliser ce projet rare, les compositeurs et le Quatuor Béla, quatuor crée en 2006 qui a enregistré l’intégrale des quatuors de Ligeti, ont mené à bien un projet novateur et abouti qui, après sa création sur scène (Lyon et Marseille), a trouvé sa forme définitive dans cet enregistrement.

Plier-Déplier est une commande de l’état dont la création a fait l’objet d’une Coproduction Grame (CNCM Lyon) – Biennale Musiques en Scène et Césaré (CNCM Reims).

Le disque comporte, deux titres, pièces de chacun des compositeurs, destinées à pouvoir être joués par de jeunes musiciens : Découper – petite passacaille de Daniel D’Adamo et Last Week-End on Mars de Thierry Blondeau.

« Plier-Déplier » or Folding and Unfolding is a piece whose special characteristic is that it was conceived by two composers. Its form is one of sharing and exchange, the music of one unfolding into the music of the other.

From the outset, a clear trajectory gives structure to the piece – starting with the pizzicati played in the highest possible tessitura of the instruments. The trajectory evolves down to the lowest tone produced by the last cord of the cello which is so slack that is becomes barely audible. This thematic thread developing throughout the piece is deformed, interrupted and fractured by the contrast between two different concepts of musical tempo: one dynamic and one suspended. The former imposes the energy and dynamism that goes with the movements and the second is expressed through the dimensions of the sound itself. Thus the piece takes the form of a permanent alternance between two states, two musics, which while never being superimposed, break the continuity of the thematic thread.

PLIER-DÉPLIER

A third voice, consisting of pre-recorded excerpts of the quartet comes as an echo to this dialog bringing reminiscences of music already heard or premonitions of sound to come.

In this weave, made up of folding and unfolding fabric, certain sounds are impossible to achieve with two hands and call for the intervention of another musician. Thus, at the end of the piece, the quartet turns into a duet where the first violinist plays with the viola player on the viola, while the second violinist does the same on the cello. As a consequence the musicians share the space of their instruments just as the authors shared their space of composition.
