« Puissamment évocatrice, la musique de Vincent Courtois a toujours cultivé un rapport particulier à l’image, fût-elle imaginée ou fantasmée. Après nous avoir dévoilé sa cinématographie intime sur l’album Bandes originales, il décide de pousser le bouchon un peu plus loin en composant sa première partition sur un film muet, et non des moindres : Finis terrae (1929), manifeste de la période bretonne de Jean Epstein.
Pour évoquer l’atmosphère poétique, fantastique et merveilleuse de ce poème marin, le violoncelliste a imaginé une instrumentation atypique, où les fréquences graves et médium du violoncelle, du basson et du saxophone ténor s’entremêlent avec les couleurs« trad’ » de l’accordéon, que ponctue une batterie toute en subtilité. S’affranchissant bientôt des images qui lui ont donné naissance, la musique vogue désormais par et pour elle-même, invitant chaque auditeur à y projeter son propre film intérieur. »

Powerfully evocative, Vincent Courtois’s music has always cultivated a special relationship to images, whether imagined or fantasized. After having unveiled his intimate cinematography on the album Bandes originales, he decided to push the envelope a little further by composing his first score on a silent film, and not the least: Finis terrae (1929), manifesto of the Breton period by Jean Epstein.
To evoke the poetic, fantastic and wonderful atmosphere of this marine poem, the cellist has devised an atypical instrumentation, where the bass and medium frequencies of the cello, bassoon and tenor saxophone intertwine with the traditional colours. the accordion, punctuated by a subtle drum. Soon freeing itself from the images that gave birth to it, music is now fashionable by and for itself, inviting each listener to project his own inner film.
