about

THE WAVES

A small word brimming with a universe of images and sensations. Rugged rocks, the majestic drop of a cliff, undulating lines, numbing whistling wind, salty lips and sticky skin, the existential pull of the vast powerful expanse, a swelling engulfing blue.

I open Virginia Woolf’s novel: “There are then warm hollows grooved in the heart of the uproar; alcoves of silence where we can shelter under the wing of beauty from truth which I desire.” The words unfold like a long evocative poem, a mesmerizing tapestry of interwoven threads, snapshots of life assembled into a kaleidoscope of grainy memories.

I dive into the prose. Its sensory quality crashes over me like a wave and seeps beneath my skin. My own memories acquire a new sheen through the lens of this powerful impressionistic poetry. I let the words flow through my body and translate them into songs. While the novel echoes the transient nature of time and the looming shadow of mortality, I experience it as an ode to life with all its vagaries.

These songs are my way of expressing gratitude for existence.
“And in me too the wave rises. It swells; it arches its back. I am aware once more of a new desire, something rising beneath me.”
